How can you advance your PR career and stand out from the masses? These five tips will get you started on a path to a bright future.

1. Become a member of an industry organization

Joining an industry organization like the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA) is the perfect way for a PR professional to stay connected throughout the industry and enhance their skill-set. With a community of over 30,000 communications professionals and over 120 chapters throughout the country, PRSA gives its members unparalleled access to professional growth opportunities and other industry experts. PRSA also releases webinars, publications and e-newsletters, and hosts conferences and networking events that educate on trends, industry news, best practices and thought leadership.

2. Never stop learning!

Steve Jobs said it best, “Learn continually, there’s always ‘one more thing’ to learn.” The same holds true for PR professionals, regardless of how seasoned you are. The Press Previews team recommends tuning into webinars, attending seminars and keeping up with thought leaders. The valuable information you gain will give you the background knowledge you need to take your career to the next level.

3. Stay up to date with industry news and trends

The industry is always changing and new trends are always on the rise, so it’s up to you to stay in the know. While it may seem daunting to constantly keep up, there are few tricks that make it easy. Publications like PR Week and O’Dwyer’s have daily e-newsletters that give you a quick snapshot of the latest news and trends. Another great way to stay up to date is by signing up for industry related e-newsletters from SmartBrief, an e-newsletter curator.

4. Utilize PR resources

PR resources can help save PR professionals valuable time and optimize their efforts.  From tools that help you locate contact information for journalists, to a monitoring tool that keeps track of all your clients’ coverage, to a database of the best influencers, there really is a PR resource for each of your needs. In a previous post, the Press Previews team discussed their favorite tools that they use every day.

5. Find a mentor

The PR industry is comprised of so many amazing leaders and brilliant minds. If you’re just starting out in the industry or your career in PR began a while ago, it is very important to find a mentor who can teach you valuable lessons and guide you through the complex industry. The right mentor will be extremely well-connected from their many years in the industry, and can introduce you to the right people so you can build your own personal network.
